The Rainbow Bridge The Lonely House Unfortunately, there comes a time when it is time to say goodbye to a much-loved pet. This can be like losing a member of the family, and we understand how upsetting this can be. Sometimes owners ask if we can do a house visit to put a pet to sleep, and we do try to fit in with this where possible, if enough notice can be given. However we do ask that clients understand that it is not always possible for us to do everything and rush out to someone's house, and if an animal suddenly collapses it is best if they can be transported to the surgery. At the surgery we usually use our third consulting room if an animal is to be put to sleep; this is a quiet room, less ‘clinical’ than our main consultation rooms, that we can use for the euthanasia of pets, and where you can spend some time and privacy when you need it most. We use an overdose of anaesthetic injected intravenously, and an animal will simply go to sleep within seconds of the injection; we encourage owners to stay and comfort their animals if they wish, and to remain afterwards at the surgery until they feel they are able to go home. Many pet owners want to know what happens "afterwards". There are 3 main options;
The last option is becoming more and more popular, although it is rather expensive. We use a reputable specialist animal funeral service and can arrange a private cremation with the return of your pet’s ashes if you wish Another point to bear in mind is the grief and pain that pet owners can experience after losing a pet. We understand that this is a very real problem, and we try to help in a number of ways; we have a leaflet available which gives useful information on how to cope; we can recommend books which take the matter into more detail; or you may wish to speak to one of our vets or nurses who have both received specialist training in grief counselling This can be very helpful in a situation like this. Most importantly we are here to listen - or to talk - if you need support after losing a pet; we share the sorrows as well as the joys of your life with your pet. |
