SAM ROSS

Sam Ross, Pet Of The Month January 2009

Big, handsome and lucky to be alive!

Sam arrived home one evening and settled down for a nap much as usual, but his owners soon realised that something was amiss. The following morning Sam was obviously unwell and brought into the surgery as soon as we opened. Sam’s scuffed claws suggested that he might have been in a scuffle with a car and after a thorough clinical examination, Veterinary Surgeon Brin McNeill was concerned about the possibility that he may have ruptured his bladder or his diaphragm.

Sam was hospitalised and his condition stabilised before having x-rays taken. These confirmed the vets’ suspicions, Sam had indeed suffered a ruptured diaphragm. This was repaired during surgery that revealed that Sam’s bladder was also ruptured and his kidney was badly bruised.

Sam came through what proved to be one of the longest and most complex operations undertaken here at Castle Veterinary Centre in 2008. He was transferred to VetsNow for intensive nursing over the weekend and spent a further few days with us, when his gentle acceptance of all the interventions necessary made him a favourite with the entire team here, which is why he has been chosen to be our first Pet Of The Month for 2009.

Sam has gone on to make a full recovery from his ordeal with no permanent damage to his lungs or kidney, and is one very lucky black cat!
